Chiang Mai in northern Thailand is very popular as a tourist destination, attracting over 1 million visitors each year. While many come for the zoo or to see the famed Chiang Mai Night Bazaar, many others come to participate in one of the many festivals that are held in Chiang Mai throughout the year. Quite a few of the festivals are old and based on religious beliefs and the lunar cycle of the moon, while others are fairly recent and are meant to highlight regional crafts and customs.
